List of pros and cons of death penalty

Death Penalty has both advantages and disadvantages. So let’s see what are the pros and cons of death penalty.

Pros of the Death penalty:

  1. Costs less to the government when opposed to life imprisonment without parole.

The expenses that are taken by the government for imposing capital punishment are higher as compared to the costs of life without parole. If the government decides for life imprisonment, then the government has to provide all the facilities for food, health care and another cost of sustaining the lives of individuals serving life.

  1. It discourages the criminals to commit a crime.

The death penalty clearly explains how dangerous it is for the criminals who commits a crime and it has decreased the crime rate too. According to the study which was conducted in the year 1990, the crime rate was increased to 7% on every year when this law was eliminated. And as the Death Penalty was declared again, the number of crimes committed has become lesser. So, this is another advantage of the death penalty on preventing crimes.

  1. Lack of death penalty leads to increase in crime rate.

As per the information reported in newspaper and time magazine, more than 2 million people in the United States have become victims of crimes from assault to murder, rape, etc. Due to the insufficient laws to address, the problems have been rising day after day. Even teenagers started to choose the path to becoming part of gangsters and assault murder to innocent people. Because of this reason, there is a need for a death penalty.

  1. Freedom and safety of victims

Everyone has the right to live peacefully and be free from harm. But, due to the crimes like rape, murder, and assault committed by perpetrators, the innocent people could not live a happy life. They have no regards for life and property of others. This is another important reason why there should be a death penalty.

Cons of the Death penalty:

  1. Innocent people are executed

Many innocent people lives are wrongly accused to death row and ultimately execution. This is one of the main disadvantages of the Death penalty.

  1. Form of revenge

Proponents say that Death penalty is a form of revenge. Their opinion is there is no need of killing someone for murdering another person.

These are the disparate views that are pointed out by the opponents and proponents of the death penalty. The legislators should consider all the problems presented by the public and they should listen to the voice of the people.
